North Down MP Dr Stephen Farry recently visited SERC to deliver a talk to Public Service students about the day to day role of an MP and to answer any questions they had about working in public office.

Course Lecturer, Irwin Price said, “The students are currently studying a unit on government, policies and the public services and decided to invite their local MP to meet with them. They were delighted when he accepted the invitation and thoroughly enjoyed his company.

“Dr Farry answered numerous, charged questions which made for interesting discussion along with some light-hearted humour. He was able to facilitate debate on topical issues, helping students gain a better understanding of how central Government works. The students now have a better understanding of how the House of Commons operates, how laws are made and the impact of policies on society.

Irwin concluded, “The students have become increasingly interested in politics following introduction to the subject through their studies. At this rate, Dr Farry may be contesting his seat against candidates from the public services course in the 2024 election!”
