This lockdown SERC is encouraging people to share with us their works of art and crafts, to inspire people to pick up a paintbrush, sewing needle or anything else that gets your creativity flowing.

Lockdown gives us the opportunity to explore new hobbies and ways to keep ourselves entertained,  as well as to show off and improve our skills. That is why this lockdown SERC is encouraging people to share with us their works of art and crafts, to inspire people to pick up a paintbrush, sewing needle or anything else that gets your creativity flowing. Whether you are a beginner or a master at your chosen art form, making something can lead to better mental wellbeing, as well as being a fun hobby, so let’s get creative!

This week we are featuring Paper Quilling crafts made by Anna Leahy, SERC Student Engagement Officer - Quality Improvement and Development.

Anna comments, "Paper quilling is a craft which involves twisting, curling and shaping thin strips of coloured paper and gluing them down to create pictures. It’s not a very popular craft, I found out about it from a friend. One of my 2021 resolutions was to pick up a creative hobby that I can do at home during lockdown and to reduce my screen time during evenings and weekends. Paper quilling was something that I thought I would enjoy, as well as to give me a new challenge and to feel therapeutic!"

"A friend kindly surprised me with a paper quilling kit after Christmas to get me started and so over the past couple of months I’ve been able to try out a few designs and techniques. As it is such delicate work, it is hard to keep everything neat and perfect! But the end result is so satisfying and pretty (most of the time!) I’m still a beginner but paper quilling is something you can enjoy not matter what your skill level is"

"My favourite designs I’ve done so far are my little curly blue cloud and the “G” I made as a thank you for my friend who gifted me the set."

If you have any paintings, crafts, sewing projects or any other creative and artistic things you would like to share, please contact cdonaldson@serc.ac.uk.
