Lockdown gives us the opportunity to explore new hobbies and ways to keep ourselves entertained, as well as to show off and improve our skills. That is why this lockdown SERC is encouraging people to share with us their works of art and crafts, to inspire people to pick up a paintbrush, sewing needle or anything else that gets your creativity flowing. Whether you are a beginner or a master at your chosen art form, making something can lead to better mental wellbeing, as well as being a fun hobby, so let’s get creative!
This week we are featuring Rebekah Cunningham's newest sewing project.
"The fabric I used for this post is the Art Gallery Cotton Poplin fabric. It is described as a beautifully soft and smooth 100% cotton fabric. It will be very comfortable to wear and breathable too. The colours are stunning too. It is a medium weight fabric so great for any tops, dresses, skirts and shorts. With it being medium weight, it wouldn’t need to be lined unless you particularly wanted to. Do consider carefully how much fabric you will need as it is a narrower fabric at 110cm."
"The Indigo pattern is definitely my go to pattern when I’m not sure what to make. I could make it in my sleep and I know it works especially for cotton poplins like this one. The gathered skirt is perfect for showcasing a fabric that has a fabulous design on it. I think it’s important to spend a little extra time with the skirt gathers so that they look pretty even. I also add in waist ties to help cinch in at the waist a bit. Although I do usually use buttons for my button placket, I decided to use plastic poppers this time that I think tie in with the fabric colours nicely."
"I used a universal size 80 needle and also overlocked any seams for a tidy finish. Since I added the button/popper front I decided to use some bias binding I had in my stash for the neckline. It gives a nice tidy finish."
