Computing Students Help Install New Computer Suite

Foundation Degree Computing students from South Eastern Regional College (SERC) have recently helped complete the second stage of the installation of a new computer suite for the Bangor Foodbank & Community Support (BFCS) Resource Centre. 

In December 2022, a group of Level 3 Computing students undertook a site visit to the BFCS Resource Centre. The BFCS Resource Centre’s Manager wanted to explore the possibility of constructing a computer suite for community use in the centre, and SERC students were tasked with bringing the idea to life. During the initial visit, students took measurements and calculated the maximum number of PCs that would fit into the space. The students then prepared a presentation for the Foodbank Manager, which highlighted different desk positions and PC network configurations to be considered. This allowed the Manager to make an informed decision when speaking with the electrician when installing the necessary components of the new computer suite.   

Recently the students were invited back to the Centre, which has now completed the first stage of construction for the computer suite. The students, who are now studying a Foundation Degree in Computing and working within the SERC FixIT student company, were then tasked with configuring the room and worked on the installation of 16 PC's.  

Several SERC staff members also provided support throughout this process, including Ryan Major, Richard Sittlington, Matthew Buckle, and Graham Kirk.   

The first step of this PC installation process has now been completed, and the students will return for a third and final visit to the centre to setup and configure their server in the future, allowing for internet connectivity.
