Moving on from secondary school can be challenging.   But for Christopher Lyons, further studies at college have led to a Higher Level Apprenticeship and a career in engineering.

Christopher (18) from Spa, completed his GCSEs at Ballynahinch High School in 2022. He said, “I did some research about my options after GCSEs and did go along to an open day in SERC’s Downpatrick Campus.   There were plenty of options, but I was most interested in engineering, and my GCSE grades allowed for progression to the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering (Mechatronics)."

He added, “Coming to college was very different from school and the course was challenging, but I made some new friends, and you soon settle in.   You are working all the time to keep up with all the assignments.   You are also learning new subjects and getting to grips with new software, but the tutors are good and helpful if you have any issues.   You are encouraged to ask questions all the time.”

This summer, the young man successfully completed his BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering (Mechatronics) with Distinction in most subjects.

He said, “I was keen to progress and am delighted to have secured a Higher Level Apprenticeship post with Walter Watsons Ltd.   I started working in June and this September I will be returning to SERC to start my Higher Level Apprenticeship in Engineering course.   I will be in college one day each week and will be working the other four days."

Christopher concluded, “My parents are happy with the choices I have made, and I would recommend this route if you are interested in a career in engineering."

Christopher Killen, Manufacturing Engineering, Walter Watsons Ltd said, “Congratulations to Christoper on his course success. We are delighted to have him join our team as he embarks on his Higher Level Apprenticeship in Engineering at Walter Watsons Ltd and SERC.”

There is still time to enrol in some of our full time further and higher education programmes.
