Students and staff got into the festive spirit when they took part in a session to make Christmas wreaths which they plan to sell at the Christmas Fair in Downpatrick Campus on Wednesday 4 December – with 75% of the proceeds from sales in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Year 2 and 3 Skills for Life and Work students were led in the session by Mr Dermot Rooney (father of lecturer Catherine Rooney). Mr Rooney brought along all the greenery including fresh moss, fir, holly and ivy, and showed the students how to build up the wreaths.   They were then adorned with festive baubles and bows.

Anne Murphy, Associate Lecturer in Foundation Skills, said, “If you haven’t yet purchased a Christmas wreath then we would encourage you to pre-order by emailing me: annemurphy@serc.ac.uk. The beautifully hand-crafted fresh wreaths will be available to purchase for £12 (additional donations welcome).

She added, “The wreathmaking session was something all the students and staff enjoyed.    The room smelt like a walk in the woods, and we were delighted with the results of our efforts. We all felt we had acquired a wonderful new skill and enjoyed learning how to construct the wreath and about the evergreen foliage. Knowing that part of the profits would be donated to charity increased the feel-good factor.”

The Skills for Life and Work students and staff would like to thank Mr Rooney for his time and for supplying the foliage.
