Careers Support Helps Chloe Access Dream Course

SERC’s Careers Service is open for business to help with those vital next steps school leavers and parents will want to consider during this extra-ordinary time.

Shirley Moore, Senior Careers Officer, said, "The SERC Careers Service offers professional, impartial careers advice and guidance and is available to prospective SERC students and parents, as well as everyone living in the local community. It is so important to plan, whether you are progressing on from school for further study or taking important first steps in your career or want to move your career on. Our Careers team are here to help you prepare for your future.

She added, “Our Careers Advisors are available for one-to-one video call or telephone calls to help you get the information you need to plan ahead and know your options, allowing you to make more effective career decisions. They can help identify suitable courses or programmes to help you build up your skills, as well as help with UCAS and other higher education applications and interview preparation. You can also avail of support for your CV, job applications and job search information, work placement and volunteering opportunities.

 “Whatever stage you are at, we are able to offer tailored information to help you make the decisions to get you to where you want to be in your career.”

Chloe Brophy, (27) returned to education completing the Access Course at SERC’s Lisburn Campus and is now in first year of the BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy at Ulster University. She said, “My first encounter with the Careers team was when I was preparing my UCAS application. Nora, one of the Careers Advisors, worked with me and I was so pleased how polished my personal statement was after guidance from a few meetings.

“Nora was my first port of call when applying for a scholarship to help with university finances. She suggested we use my personal statement as the starting point and worked on fine-tuning it to suit this angle. I was thrilled to be awarded a scholarship and don’t believe I would have been successful without her help and support.

Chloe added, “As an adult returner, I did have a mild moment of panic, wondering if I would get to university for the course I wanted, so I went back to Nora to get some advice on a Plan B. She reassured me and was more than happy to tell me about different routes I could take to get to where I wanted to be. It wasn’t about changing my goals but being prepared to change the timeline if I needed to.

Chloe concluded, “I would advise any student who is unsure about what they want to do with their future to contact the Careers Team at SERC. My experience has been of a friendly and caring team who are passionate about helping students whether you are progressing from school to further or higher education, an adult returner or living in the local community and want to know what is available.”
