Student Campaign Representative Gemma Diamond and Staff Campaign Representative Roger Duncan

The campaign aims to create a sustainable programme of community action across the UK, whilst helping to support the mental health and wellbeing of staff and students, given the scientifically proven benefits that volunteering and supporting social causes has on mental health.

One of the overarching aims of the campaign, is to generate £1 million in social value. The College is encouraging staff and students to get involved with local charities, community groups and volunteering, to help ensure that the most vulnerable people in our communities are looked after, especially in the run up to Christmas.

If you are a member of staff or a student who currently participates in volunteering, fundraising, or any form of charity work, we would love to hear from you.

Roger Duncan, (SERC Head of Pastoral Care, SERC Extra and SERC Newtownards Campus Manager), said on his experience: “SERC plays an important role within our local community, and our Staff and Students volunteer extensively helping to foster Community Spirit. The Covid-19 Pandemic has been a difficult time for many, and through highlighting volunteering, SERC is looking to encourage and develop this incredible community spirit.  Helping others has proven to improve a person’s general health and mental wellbeing, and SERC is keen to highlight our staff and students who get involved in volunteering within their local community.”

As we approach Christmas break, many charities become even more in need of volunteers, as for many people it is a difficult time of year. This is a great opportunity to get involved and make a difference in your local community this Christmas.

As part of the national campaign SERC will be sharing information on the range of volunteering and fund-raising initiatives our students and staff participate in.

You can tell us about your volunteering and food bank donation efforts by submitting them through this form. Please contact cdonaldson@serc.ac.uk if you have any queries.
