Enrolling at SERC brought Cathy Keeley (34) from Belfast a step closer to the HR career she desired. During years of management in the service industry Cathy developed a passion for the HR side of business so set out to retrain and gain qualifications that would help her achieve a successful career switch.
Cathy enrolled on the CIPD Level 5 HR Business Management course at South Eastern Regional College (SERC), knowing that completing this would be a great advantage in securing a position in the industry”.
Having previously achieved a degree from Ulster University this was a return to higher education for Cathy who says “It had been a number of years since I studied in a college setting and I was nervous initially. Balancing full-time work and being a mummy was daunting! However, I was very fortunate to have Terry McNamara as a tutor and fantastic classmates who had a wealth of experience in various areas of business. Terry was a phenomenal support - I couldn’t have done it without him.”
Speaking about how the course has helped her in her career, Cathy said “I was promoted to recruitment during my studies and was able to implement aspects of my learning into my new role immediately with great results. My new role is as a recruiter at Concentrix, which involves talent sourcing, CV review, screening, booking and taking interviews, job offering, team meetings, welcome meetings, liaising with internal and external bodies to name a few.”
Cathy concluded by saying “I enjoyed learning HR and business practices on a more in-depth basis, and being able to see how best working practices can help grow and develop the industry I currently work in. I would recommend SERC to anyone considering further or higher education, knowledge is power!”
