Students from SERC’s Level 3 Construction Built Environment course had the opportunity to practice their technical and professional skills at construction companies in Malta as part of an Erasmus+ Further Education VET project.

The students worked alongside construction professionals gaining valuable practical experience in quantity, building and land surveying, architecture, restorations as well as health and safety issues and design for construction. This placement enhanced their cultural understanding and helped to increase their personal and employability skills such as self-confidence, self-management, teamworking, leadership, communication and planning and decision making.

Students gained confidence in their abilities, reinforcing their career options with many now considering work abroad as a viable career option.

Simon Cummings, Deputy Head of School for Construction said, “This is a wonderful opportunity for our students from all campuses to travel and work abroad. We believe this will give them the edge going forward with a career in the construction industry.”

The students agreed that this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that would impact on their career choices and improve their chances of employment, giving them the edge over other graduates.
