South Eastern Regional College (SERC) will be hosting an online event called ‘Encouraging Girls into IT’ on Wednesday 5 May 1:30pm-3:30pm. Part of the ‘Bring IT On’ campaign, the event will talk through the courses and career prospects available in the IT industry and aims to inspire a new generation of female IT professionals.
‘Bring IT On’ is a programme funded by the Department for the Economy, it is designed to encourage and educate young people about the career pathways in IT. The “Encouraging Girls into IT” event is to provide the young minds of today the help and support needed to climb the ladder to success.
Computing lecturer Claire Clarke, one of the organisers of the event said “In recent years, we have noticed a decline in the number of females applying for IT courses across all levels within the realm of IT. As a school we are passionate about enhancing the student experience and since this is an issue across the board, we decided to host an event ‘Encouraging girls into IT’.”
“During the two-hour session, participants will have the opportunity to hear from females who are currently working within the IT sector. There will be a mix of live and recorded sessions focusing on careers and testimonials from women who work in or are involved in IT. Some of the topics that will be covered include cyber security, Games industry and software development. Some SERC alumni will be attending to talk about the paths they have taken.”
Claire concluded “We hope that this event will provide students, particularly girls and young women, with information about the qualifications needed to obtain a job in technology as well as outlining the benefits of working in the sector and help them gain the necessary insight to progress in the IT sector.”
