Bricklaying Apprenticeship Helps Joshua with Career

Joshua Orr, a Level 3 Bricklaying Apprentice is keen to share the benefits of taking the apprenticeship route.

Joshua (20), from Newtownards was awarded predicted grades for his GCSEs following Covid.   He said: “I was keen to progress, but my grades limited what I could do.   I had tried some practical classes at school, so I felt getting a trade would be the best route for me.  Back then, South Eastern Regional College (SERC) was running a programme which allowed me to build on my grades and try joinery, plastering and bricklaying.  My placement for the bricklaying element was with Jem Chamos Bricklaying. I was lucky enough to secure employment with Jem, the owner, and started my apprenticeship with Jem and SERC.

Joshua said, “The apprenticeship route has been perfect for me.   I enjoy being out and about, being busy, and the practical work.   I am part of a small team, and we all work well together.   If there is something you don’t know, you just ask as the team has a wealth of experience.   My skills and knowledge on the job are backed up by all the theory I gain in college one day a week, and likewise, what I learn in class, I am able to apply to my work."

Joshua concluded, “I would recommend the apprenticeship route.   It is good for anyone who wants to progress but is not keen on the academic route.   Getting an employer to take you on can be competitive. You are employed - you are in a real job where you are learning as you gain your qualifications - so you must be dedicated.” 

SERC is hosting Information and Apprenticeships - Have a Go Sessions during NI Apprenticeship Week, 4.30 – 7.00pm on Thursday 6 February (Downpatrick and Lisburn Campuses).
