Students at South Eastern Regional College (SERC) have been praised for their volunteering efforts as part of national Volunteers’ Week.

Almost 200 students have taken part in Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Awards at the College and in 2019/20 they have donated 2288 hours of voluntary activity which equates to a social value of £9,952.

Michelle Hickland, Deputy Head of School of Construction, Engineering Services and Skills for Work, SERC said “ We are immensely proud of the students on entry level and level 1 programmes at SERC who have been working towards DofE/Gaisce – The President’s Awards during 2019/20.   Many of these students have specific barriers to learning so the programme has been a challenge which they have risen to, often reaching, and exceeding personal goals.

She added, “The hours donated and the social value this activity has far reaching benefits for other people, organisations and causes, as well as the students who recognise the power and combined efforts of their volunteering, whether they were baking buns, taking part in a sponsored walk or helping out in the local community.”
