Congratulations to South Eastern Regional College (SERC) past student Rhys McClenaghan who has been awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Year Honours.

Rhys (21), from Newtownards, is Commonwealth and European pommel horse champion and became the first Irish gymnast to win a World Championship medal last year.

The young man successfully completed the BTEC Level 3 Sport at the College’s Bangor Campus in 2018 and has remained in contact with the College providing inspiration for both students and staff.

Lynda Robinson, Assistant Head of School, Applied Science and Sport at SERC said, “We are thrilled and delighted for Rhys on this much-deserved honour. Rhys was a dedicated student at SERC, and we welcomed the opportunity to support him in his studies whilst he pursued his position as an elite athlete. Rhys is a fantastic ambassador for sport and all young people. He has been very generous with his time and recently visited SERC to make a short film about his studies at the College and his current schedule.

Lynda concluded, “This young man is full of positivity, determination and focus and we look forward to watching his continued success. We send our hearty congratulations on his BEM and wish Rhys all the very best for the future.”
