SERC are offering a new course which aims to enhance knowledge of how to care for adults suffering from dementia.

SERC are offering the Level 3 Award in Awareness of Dementia at the Newtownards Campus. The new 86-hour knowledge based course comprises four modules focusing on: understanding the dementia process and experience, medication use in dementia, communication and interaction and inclusion and diversity in dementia.

Andrea Kennedy, Business Development Manager for Health and Social Care at SERC said, "We are thrilled to see this new Level 3 Award in Awareness of Dementia up and running. The course meets growing needs of the Health and Social Care sector within Northern Ireland. As life expectancy within the population rises, so too does the need for greater awareness of illnesses such as dementia. We are currently the only college within Northern Ireland to deliver this course and will be recruiting soon for new cohorts.”

It is estimated that almost 20,000 people in Northern Ireland are living with dementia.
