Level 2 Traineeship in Art and Design students recently completed a mural project in the Atlas Women’s Centre in Lisburn, as part of the work placement portion of their course.
The Atlas Women’s Centre in Lisburn provides a welcoming environment for adult learning, personal growth and community engagement. Offering a variety of programmes focused on enhancing life skills and promoting mental and emotional well-being, the centre is open to everyone in the local community. The centre recently acquired a new area in need of creative development and invited SERC Art & Design students to collaborate on potential designs for a mural in the newly developed area of the building.
The students visited the centre to engage with residents and to gather insights about their preferences for the theme of the mural. The residents highlighted their preference was for a colourful design that reflected elements of Northern Ireland. After careful planning and design development, the students presented their ideas, which were well-received by both staff and residents at the centre and commenced painting.
The final mural piece was a vibrant collection of paintings, depicting trees, grass, flowers, dogs, butterflies, mountains, and the Harland and Wolff shipyard.
Mary Doran, SERC Associate Lecturer in Art and Design, comments, “The students were thrilled with this opportunity. Throughout the process, they received numerous compliments from staff and visitors at the Atlas Centre, who praised their good manners, courtesy, and artistic skills. As a result of their excellent work, there have been requests for the students to create an additional mural at another centre in Lisburn. Overall, it's been a great experience for the students to develop their skills and work with local organisations.”
