NI Apprenticeship Week 2022

The HLA has not only provided Ronan from Downpatrick with the drive to succeed as a chartered accountant, but also knowledge which helps him in his current work role.

Ronan spoke about his experience at university and why he made the switch to studying an HLA. “After leaving St Patrick’s Grammar School, I went to Ulster University for one year. I didn’t enjoy university or the learning experience it provided, so I looked for alternative routes and found more hands-on experience to learning here at SERC, and the HLA course has been hugely beneficial to me. I have enjoyed my experience at SERC so far, the teaching has been very informative.”

Currently employed with MB McGrady and Company in Downpatrick, Ronan spoke about his job and what it involves, “I have undertaken a bookkeeper and accounts assistant role. I am currently involved in the ‘Making Tax Digital’ team, dealing with online accounting software, preparing accounts, VAT returns and tax compliance for a variety of sole traders, partnerships and owner manged limited companies.”

Speaking about his future, Ronan said, “Hopefully come August time I will have passed my exams and completed my Higher-Level Apprenticeship in Accountancy. After this I hope to begin my Chartered Accountant journey.”

Ronan concluded by saying, “A friend who had previously completed the course recommended it to me, and I would highly recommend to anyone thinking about an HLA. If you are thinking about it, just go for it, the hands-on approach to learning is the best way forward. I would also recommend SERC, as I have had a brilliant experience and received good quality teaching preparing me for exams and work.”
