With a love for animals and with no doubt about her desired career, the animal management pathway has been a step in the right direction for Anna Glover, who is currently studying the Level 3 Animal Management at SERC’s Bangor campus.

Anna (21) from Dundonald says “I went to Lagan College and did my A Levels in ICT, Travel and Tourism and Public Services. When thinking about what I wanted to do next, I knew that working with animals would be perfect for me, as I am such an animal lover at heart. My mum and I went to visit the SERC Bangor campus to get some information about the courses there. As soon as we stepped into the building, we both felt the welcoming and homely atmosphere, so I knew right away that SERC was the perfect option for me.”

She continues, “I originally planned to do the Level 3 Animal Management course, but without a qualification in biology, I needed to do a year on the Level 2 course before progressing further. I found the science elements of the course a bit challenging, but it was good to learn a lot of new knowledge along with the other study units. I am now in my second year of the Level 3 course, and I would say my favourite modules so far have been the exotics unit and a project in wildlife ecology, both of which have been very interesting and enjoyable.”

“The tutors I have had during my time at SERC have been absolutely amazing, especially Laura Finnegan, Siobhan Tolerton, Julie Armstrong, and Jonny Cash to name just a few. They will go out of their way to help my classmates and me, and always go the extra mile. The level of support I have received has been amazing. Even when you are walking through the hallways, other members of staff will always say hello and are very polite which makes it a friendly environment.”

Speaking on support and facilities, Anna said, “I am very open about having dyslexia, and I have benefited from SERC learning support which has enabled me to have extra time in exams. The whole process was very easy, and after a five-minute conversation with the team about how they could help, a plan was put in place for me which I have found extremely helpful. I use the library and the study room as areas to study when I need a quiet place to get some work done which has been very helpful in helping me focus. The library has a lot of good resources and lots of computers too, which are good to have on campus.”

Concluding, Anna says “I definitely recommend anyone who is thinking of doing an animal management course to consider SERC. The staff for the Level 3 course itself are fantastic, and you will be in the best hands with any support that you need. After I finish my Level 3, I would like to take a few years out and gain some work experience. Right now, I am unsure which area of the animal industry I would want to specialise in, so getting experience in different areas is an important step for me. In the future, I would love to return to SERC and complete my HNC and HND in Animal Management.”
