This dynamic, project driven, vocational Performing Arts course has been designed for young aspiring actors to develop skills in acting, movement, voice, devising and technical theatre that are required to work in the industry. This course is a full-time two-year programme and is equivalent to 3 A levels.

Course Overview

 

With the emphasis on live performance, you will develop both practical and theoretical skills through study of 10 units that make up the National Extended Diploma in Performing Arts Practice. 100% of this course is internally assessed, meaning no external exams.

This course is highly practical and focused on providing graduates with the skills to progress either to further training, or directly into the industry.

You will learn through Project Based Learning (PBL), enhancing your performance skills while performing to public audiences in our state-of-the-art facilities (SPACE) as part of SERC’s Glass Umbrella Theatre Company (Bangor), and with SERCus Theatre Company (Lisburn) in our creative hub, the Historical Landmark Building, Castle House.

Over the last few years, the department has been expanding its international links to enable students the opportunity to travel and gain practical, professional experience. In recent years, students have been provided the opportunity to go on trips to Barcelona, London, and Dublin, with all expenses paid, and we hope to expand this as we move forward. The course is challenging, energetic and industry relevant.

The modules studied for the Extended Diploma provide staff and students the opportunity to tailor your performance and production styles to best suit the learning needs of the current students.

Each year includes a number of public performances, as well as the opportunity to develop your own performance material. In previous years, students have had the opportunity to work with local, professional companies allowing students to gain contacts and experience in a professional environment.

Throughout your course, you will also be involved in a range of projects designed to improve your employability. These projects will enable you to achieve further, personal development qualifications to help enhance your CV.

 

You have a passion for Performing Arts and would like to improve your performance skills. Our course also develops important skills for life and work in a fun, practical, and enjoyably challenging environment.

The industry specific skills that you learn will make you more employable in Film, TV, Theatre, Radio, Directing, Teaching, Coaching or Technical Theatre.

However, all students will grow in confidence, gain communication skills, and become more well-rounded and self-assured adults.

 

To develop skills as an actor, through devising, developing ideas and concepts for live performance, drama improvisation, movement, voice, and improvisation.

The majority of our classes are practical where you are given the freedom to explore a variety of performance styles.

Any written work will allow you to further develop and evaluate your practical skills and you will be encouraged to independently expand your knowledge of those topics that you find most interesting. Along with the practical skills needed to enter the performance industry, you will also learn about surviving in this business.

We look at various routes to enter the industry, a large variety of jobs roles that you have the opportunity of pursuing, as well as how to network and develop your own portfolio and resources to help promote yourself.

 

The variety of units you will study, our amazing facilities and the many opportunities to perform in front of a live audience. Every year group is different and this course provides the flexibility for us as a team of practitioners to both expand your knowledge of your favourite performance styles, as well as the opportunity to introduce you to many avenues of the industry that you may have never considered.

Your input is valued, and the wide, professional experience of our teaching team will provide you with an eclectic and comprehensive array of styles and opportunities to explore.

Successful completion of this programme will provide each student with the equivalent of 3 A Levels, allowing them the opportunity to either progress directly into a number of avenues of employment, or also into Higher Education.

Many previous students have progressed onto University, Drama School, Conservatoire or to SERC’s HND in Performing Arts.

 

4 GCSEs at Grade C or above, or an equivalent (such as a BTEC L2 Diploma, including the L2 Diploma in Performing Arts),

plus successful outcome at audition/interview

If you do not currently hold a GCSE or equivalent in Numeracy, Literacy, or ICT, you will have the opportunity to achieve these qualifications alongside your Level 3 Extended Diploma.
