This new, highly creative course is aimed at students who aspire to work in the vibrant creative media industries. The course has been designed to provide post-16 learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to progress to higher education [HNC/HND or Degree] and training or employment in the creative media industries.

Course Overview

The full time course runs for 1 year (min 15 hrs per week).

Throughout the duration of this course students will develop a broad range of skills and disciplines which will allow them to discover which aspect of creative media that interests them the most.

The qualification will be delivered through two main phases: an initial exploratory phase, and a final confirmatory phase.

Exploratory phase - learners experiment with diverse creative media, materials, techniques and processes across specialist skills areas. You will investigate progression opportunities and develop a portfolio of work to support existing practice and progression while developing towards a specialist area of practice. 

Confirmatory phase - learners produce a final major project and draw upon the summation of knowledge and skills acquired during their learning. You will be encouraged to extend personal ambition whilst understanding the professional context for presenting their finished work.

There are six content area and these are:

  • investigation
  • experimentation
  • evaluation and review
  • realisation
  • communication
  • self-directed practice

You are looking to broaden your practical and theoretical understanding of creative media practice as a bridging year in preparation for higher education to a HNC, HND or Degree level study or; elf-employment or employment in the creative industries.

The programme is ideal for

• learners who may not have had a significant amount of learning of creative subjects at Level 3

• learners who have prior learning at Level 3 within the creative sector, but wish to consolidate their learning further before progressing to HE

• adult learners with some creative experience, but without Level 3 creative qualifications.

The programme offer learners the opportunity to experiment widely and take creative risks in order to develop a broad portfolio of work and professional behaviours required for progression within the field of creative media.

It also provides opportunities to develop visual skills in for example, film, audio, studio and lighting through the pathways of studio practice, audio practice, film practice and narrative over the course of study through a process of self-direction, reflective practice and communication, which are key skills for progression to higher education.

The opportunity to explore and experiment with a broad range of creative media and materials within a visual context.

The creative arts studios and equipment available for students. 

The chance to work collaboratively on live briefs and exhibit both internally and externally.

Working on internal and external client commissions.

The programme aims to develop creative skills valued by higher education and employers, whilst also providing learners with valuable transferable skills. 

These skills enable progression to Higher level qualifications such as HNC/HND and degrees or; self employment or employment within the creative industries.

BTEC National Diploma in Media or Photography or an A Level pass at Grade C  in a visual arts subject such as photography, or MIA or art and design with 4 GCSEs Grade C to include English.

At interview, you must bring a portfolio of work displaying an interest and ability in visual arts with a particular interest in the creative media such as MIA or video

You will be required to complete Essential Skills in Numeracy, Literacy and ICT if you do not have a GCSE grade C.
