Course Overview

This course is equivalent to 2 A Levels. The course consists of 8 units, 6 Mandatory units and 2 external exam units which enable you to study particular areas in depth. 

Core units include:

  • The Recruitment and Selection in Travel and Tourism
  • Visitor Attractions
  • Principles of Marketing in Travel & Tourism
  • Managing the Customer Experience in Travel
  • Researching Current Travel Trends and Key Issues in Travel and Travel & Tourism
  • Travel & Tourism Enterprise. 

External Exam Units include:

  • World of Travel & Tourism and Global Destinations

You will also work towards a Personal Development qualification and will be involved in a range of activities, designed to improve your employability. You will be required to complete Essential Skills in Literacy or Numeracy if you do not have a GCSE grade C in English or Maths or Computing. 

Learners will, as part of their course, gain a City & Guilds Employability qualification.

Class learning will be supplemented with the use of guest speakers and visits to local travel, tourism and hospitality providers.

You want to develop your knowledge of the different components within the sectors of Travel and Tourism and undertake employment as an Events Manager, Visitor Attraction Manager, Hotel Manager, Travel Agent, Tour Operator or a in a career in an Airport, Airline or as a member of Cabin Crew.

The importance of the Customer Experience in Travel, develop your researching skills by completing the Researching Current Travel Trends and Key Issues module or how to develop your own Travel and Tourism Business in the Travel and Tourism Enterprise module.

The field trips and residential study visits that you will take part in on this course, allowing you to gain a true insight into the travel and tourism sector.

Onto year 2 of the programme and you will complete units such as, Principles of Marketing in Travel & Tourism Marketing, Recruitment and Selection and Tourism and Travel and Tourism Enterprise.  

Once you have successfully completed this two-year course, progression to roles in the Travel and Tourism industry include roles in human resources, event and visitor attraction organisations, the cruise sector, marketing, ticketing, tour operations or within a retail or business travel agency.

You may alternatively wish to progress to the HNC in International Tourism Management which is run in our Lisburn Campus or progress to a Tourism course at University.

BTEC Level 2 Diploma or 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above, GCSE Maths and English at Grade C or above or equivalent e.g. Essential Skills is desirable.
