Level 3 Diploma in Civil Engineering for Technicians (Institution of Civil Engineers)
This programme helps Civil Engineering students fulfil the requirements of the competence based component and allows them to demonstrate underpinning knowledge and professional attributes.
This course is ideal if you are interested in pursuing a career in construction by progressing directly to employment as a civil engineering technician or to higher education.
Students will benefit from our industry trained lecturers and industry standard facilities with the most up to date equipment for carrying out Building Surveying, construction drawings etc.
You will learn all about Construction design, principles and technology, site engineering, civil engineering and Surveying in construction
This programme helps Civil Engineering students fulfil the requirements of the competence based component and allows them to demonstrate underpinning knowledge and professional attributes.
It also contributes to the development of trained technician level personnel for the sector and is a response to expressed employer need.
4 GCSEs at grade C or above including Maths (preferably Grade B) and English or a Level 2 Construction related qualification.
Students should have secured suitable employment.
There are seven mandatory units, which cover the following aspects of construction:
- Construction Principles
- Construction Design
- Construction Technology
- Health and safety in construction
- Further Mathematics
- Site Engineering for construction
- Construction in civil engineering.
Optional modules may include:
- Surveying in construction
- Graphical Detailing
- Management of a Construction Project
A second qualification is also completed (NVQ): Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Diploma in Civil Engineering for Technicians (Institution of Civil Engineers

- Techniques, procedures and methods for civil engineering tasks
- Develop and finalise civil engineering solutions
- Management and leadership in civil engineering
- Independent judgement and responsibility in civil engineering
- Commercial awareness in civil engineering
- Health, Safety and Welfare for civil engineers
- Sustainable development in civil engineering
- Interpersonal skills and communication in civil engineering
- Professional commitment for civil engineers
This qualification will prepare learners for direct employment in the construction and built environment sector, and is ideal if they wish to enter a particular specialist area of work, such as:
- Civil engineering technician
- Civil engineering design technician
- Civil engineering surveying technician
- Construction project technician
- Public Health Engineering technician.
You can also progress onto further and higher education and complete qualifications such as HNC/D in Construction or Civil Engineering.
