The Level 2 Rail Engineering course introduces learners to the Rail industry by equipping them with the technical skills and knowledge to carry out the role of a Rail Operative.

The learner will be introduced to the role of a rail operative, the rail Industry and given an overview of the relevant engineering technology principles.
The learner will be trained in safety communication and the relevant health and safety regulations which govern the railway industry. As well as the knowledge, skills, behaviour and attitudes of working as an effective Rail Engineering Operative.
Additionally, the learner will be introduced to engineering works which take place on the railway. They will learn the underpinning knowledge of permanent way assets and components, switches and crossings, and track geometry.
Alongside the knowledge component of the apprenticeship the learner will receive railway specific training such as Personal Track Safety (PTS) training, small tools training, manual handing etc. This will support their learning and increase their skills as a Rail Operative.
The student will attend college 1 day per week where they will receive the knowledge component by a Railway trainer. The remaining contracted hours will be spent with the employer where they will carry out practical tasks and assessments.
This course will lead the individual to the Level 3 Rail Engineering or an alternative pathway within the rail Industry.

- Restore Track Geometry Faults to Operational Condition by Manual Repair of Permanent Way Assets and Components.
- Restore Plain Line Track Geometry to the Operational Condition.
- Undertake Replacement of Permanent Way Assets and Components.
