Level 2 Apprenticeship NI in Engineering (Manufacturing)
This is a 2-year entry level apprenticeship programme aimed at engineering apprentices who need to achieve Essentials Skills qualifications in Communication and/or Numeracy alongside their vocational qualification.

We have 3 sessions available for application on this course in Bangor, Downpatrick, Lisburn.
This course is suitable if you are employed and wish to pursue a practical career in either Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering or Fabrication and Welding Engineering.
You will use industry standard machinery to developing your practical skills as well as learning about a range of engineering processes including welding, fabrication and/or machining.
This course aims to develop practical skills and knowledge which are essential for working in the engineering industry. Students will attend college for 1-2 days per week with the remainder of the week being spent with their employer.
Successful completion will lead to the award of an OCN NI Level 2 Diploma in Engineering.
You will need:
- to be employed by a SERC approved engineering/manufacturing employer AND
- to have achieved 5 GCSEs (including at least Grade D in English and Maths OR Level 1 Certificate in Essential Skills - Communication & Numeracy)
The following mandatory modules will be taken:
- Health and Safety in an Engineering and Manufacturing Environment
- Mathematics for Engineering
- Understand the Principles of Science Used within Engineering
- Engineering Materials
- Practical Engineering Project
Depending on your workplace requirements, 4 additional modules will be selected from the following:
- Hand Fitting
- Preparing and Using Lathes for Turning Operations
- Producing Plate Work Components and Assemblies
- Using Semi-Automatic Metal Inert Gas, Metal Active Gas and Flux Cored Arc-Welding Equipment
- Preparing and Using Manual TIG Welding Equipment
- Producing Sheet Metal Components and Assemblies
- Preparing and Using Milling Machines
- Preparing and Using Computerised Numerical Control Mills for Milling Operations
- Producing Computer Aided Design Models
You will also study Essential Skills to Level 2 in Numeracy, Communication and ICT if you have not already achieved GCSE or Essential Skills to an equivalent level.
As a student you will spend 2 days/week in College in Year 1 and 1 day/week in Year 2 provided you have made satisfactory progress in your Essential Skills qualifications.
You will spend the other 4 days/week with your employer.
Successful completion of this programme will enable you to apply to progress to a Level 3 Engineering Apprenticeship.
