World Ocean Day

World Ocean Day, 8th June 2021

World Ocean Day

It is that time of year again, when we celebrate World Ocean Day on the 8th June as a reminder of how important the seas are to life on Earth.

Ocean Day was first declared in 1992, and in 2008, the 8th of June was officially marked as World Ocean Day, celebrated with a different theme each year.

This year's prime focus will be on the life and livelihood that the ocean sustains. The theme for World Oceans Day 2021 is "The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods".

World Ocean Day helps to raise awareness of the benefits of the ocean and our individual and collective duty to use its resources in a sustainable manner.

Ocean Facts

  • Oceans cover more than 70% of the planet, produce at least 50% of the world's oxygen, are home to most of the Earth's biodiversity and are the main source of protein for more than a billion people.
  • They also absorb about 30% of carbon dioxide produced by humans - a buffer for the detrimental impacts of global warming.
