Did you know that it is estimated that the UK wastes £170 million a year by leaving lights on unnecessarily and that Mobile phone and laptop chargers can use energy regardless of whether they are charging or not because the voltage transformers on the plug consume energy (Energy Saving trust).
The Enterprise, Entrepreneurship and Environment team are always keen to do their bit for the planet, so we have brought together some top tips to save energy and money this winter. There are many different ways but here are a few of our easy and low cost picks:
- Turn off lights when you leave a room and unplug appliances when not in use
- Use draught excluders and thermal curtains around windows and doors to keep the cold air out. Also consider blocking any unused chimneys
- Layer up with warm clothes
- Increase the tog of your duvet or go for fleece/flannel bedsheets
- Run full loads when using the washing machine or dishwasher and use the eco mode/cycle if your appliance has one
- Clear furniture away from radiators to allow them to heat the room more effectively
