Multiply
New free courses to support number skills and boost maths confidence.
Numeracy is a vital skill and the £5.9m Multiply programme has been set up to boost the maths abilities and confidence of adults in Northern Ireland.
The Department for the Economy NI is leading on the delivery of the Multiply programme. The programme will support the Economic Vision of a regionally balanced economy, with good jobs and increased productivity, which delivers on decarbonisation.
This project is funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
Improving number confidence widens opportunities for further training and employment. SERC is delivering three strands of the Multiply programme, that are tailored to specific needs and learning pathways.
Who Can Apply?
Multiply is aimed at adults (aged 19 and above) who do not have Maths GCSE at Grade C or above (or an equivalent qualification).
Young adults aged 16-19 not in work, education or training can also apply.

Programme 1: Mastering Digital Metrics
A course designed for staff of SMEs with a focus on mastering numerical concepts directly related to digital marketing and will support SMEs with the skills they need to effectively analyse and interpret data in the digital realm.
Participants will:
- Receive an online three-hour introductory workshop on social media
- Work towards an OCN Level 2 Award
- Benefit from five one-hour sessions of online guided mentoring support per delegate
- Attend a series of three-hour masterclasses.
When: Delivered online from the week commencing 16 September 2024.
Sessions:Introduction to Social Media - Wednesday 18 Sept - 10-1
Mastering Online Marketplaces - Thursday 3rd Oct, 10-1
Excel – Thursday 7th November 10am-1pm
Digital Advertising - Thursday 21st Nov - 10-1
The OCN Level 2 Award in Social Media (eight 3.5-hour sessions) will begin Tuesday 24th September and will run from 10-1.30
Learning outcomes:
- Understand the opportunities and threats associated with using social media
- Awareness and understanding of the various social sites, the terminology, the statistics around digital use and social media marketing, personal and business risks, best practice, user data and social media policy
- Understand the application of social media
- Skills to manage digital and social campaigns: developing content, using a content calendar (Excel sample) and polls, storyboarding, paid advertisements. Understanding metrics including response rate, cost per click, conversions and audience growth rate and the use of analytics tools.

Programme 2: Number Boosts
Bootcamps delivering essential skills in Maths, for learners who want to achieve basic knowledge.
When: These courses run from September 2024, over three 3.5-hour sessions including mentoring meetings.
Where: Sessions will be in person either at SERC Campuses or community settings such as community hubs.
You’ll Learn: To be confident in using maths when, for example, planning DIY and garden maintenance, managing a household budget, tracking your fitness, meal planning and grocery shopping, or budgeting for pet ownership.

Programme 3: Maths Bridge – Connecting Maths and Language
Designed for ESOL learners.
Eighteen hours tutoring, including mentor sessions, supporting speakers of other languages. The course will introduce mathematical terms and support numeracy skills for everyday life, in areas such as bank accounts, bills, payslips, and budgeting.
