Why Study This Course

The VTCT Level 2 Traineeship in Beauty Therapy is a one-year programme and is ideal for those with an interest in starting a career in the beauty industry.

Students will have the opportunity to practice and develop their skills whilst training on each other and will complete their practical assessments in our state-of-the-art commercial beauty salons, based on campus. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in industry facing projects as well as attend industry events.

You will develop your skills and be supported throughout the course by our highly skilled beauty therapy lecturers who have many years industry experience.

Developing your wider skills as well as providing you with the technical skills and knowledge in your chosen area, the traineeship will help you to develop a range of transversal skills that are important for employment including:

  • Citizenship;
  • Working with others;
  • Problem solving and decision making;
  • Self-management;
  • Work professionalism;
  • Digital literacy
Course Overview

The course will be delivered on campus 20 hours per week including work placement.

Participants will achieve the following key elements:

  • A main vocational based qualification
  • Vocational skills development Transversal and digital skills
  • Work placement
  • Literacy and numeracy qualifications at Level 2 (may include GCSE qualifications in English and Mathematics)

Learners will have to purchase a uniform and kit, lecturers will provide details of both during interview sessions.


Direct Entry Traineeship:

  • you must hold a minimum of a Level 1 qualification, defined as four GCSE's at grades D-G, to include Maths and English at grade D or above
  • you will also be required to complete an initial vocational assessment

Introductory Traineeship: If you do not meet the enhanced entry criteria for 'Direct entry', you may enter the ‘Introductory phase’ of the Traineeship.

Suitability will be determined following an assessment of your current level of literacy and numeracy. If you have not obtained the stated entry grades for Maths & English, but your assessment determines that you have the potential to achieve a Level 2 Essential Skills in Numeracy and/or Literacy over the duration of the NI Traineeship, you may be enrolled as an ‘Introductory’ Trainee', following the same programme as those of the Full NI Traineeship except for Essential Skills.

NB. Entry criteria may be subject to change and enhanced criteria may apply.

All applicants will be invited for interview and skills test for this course.

  • Provide facial skin care treatment
  • Enhance the appearance of eyebrows and eyelashes
  • Carry out waxing services
  • Provide manicure services
  • Provide pedicure services
  • Develop and maintain effectiveness at work
  • Promote additional services or products to customers
  • Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety
  • Provide make-up services
  • Fulfil salon reception duties
  • Practical Beauty Project

Successful completion of this course can lead to employment or further study on:

  • Level 3 Beauty Therapy,
  • Level 3 Spa Therapy,
  • Level 3 Theatrical, Special Effects

SERC provide other related pathways for further study both full/part-time including Nail Services, Complimentary Therapy. Sports Massage, Hair & Media Make-up.
