During your study, you may need financial support and SERC is here to help. Find out more information on student fees and financial support in the Student Finance section.

Course Overview

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses are language programmes for people living within the UK who need to develop their English language skills for work, further learning and everyday life.

Students work towards a City & Guilds ESOL Skills for Life qualification which are ideal for anyone living in the UK who need to improve their understanding and use of written or spoken English. This qualification could help you get a job, a promotion at work, prepare for future study or be able to interact confidently in an English-speaking environment.

The revised ESOL Skills for Life qualifications cover 5 levels –

Beginner, Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate and Upper-intermediate (Entry 1 to Level 2).

Entry Requirements

Everyone over the age of 18 is welcome. All you need is a willingness and a desire to improve your English.

To join an English language course, you need to complete an initial assessment to help decide which is the best course for you and fill in an online application form. You will need to buy a text book which will cost no more than £25 new.

International students - contact international@serc.ac.uk for fee information.

For further information, please contact Tessa Barrett on tbarrett@serc.ac.uk

Where will it take me?

ESOL courses will help you to get the English skills needed in everyday life and gain an English language qualification. You will improve your Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening skills as well as gaining an understanding of living and working in the UK.

How will it make me more employable?

An ESOL qualification could help you to get a job in an English-speaking company or a place on a course at an English-speaking college or university. This course will also enable you to communicate more easily with friends, work colleagues, customers and employers and introduce you to the life and culture of Northern Ireland.

How will I be assessed and given feedback?

There will be formal recognised external exams at the end of the course for all levels.

By the end of the level, students will be able to:

Beginner Level (A1/Entry Level 1)

Use everyday expressions and phrases for practical needs, ask and answer questions about personal details, understand short texts and write simple phrases and sentences in documents such as forms.

Elementary (A2/Entry Level 2)

Understand sentences and common expressions, be able to exchange information, obtain information from short documents and familiar sources and write to communicate.

Pre-Intermediate (B1/Entry Level 3)

Understand main points of clear communication, express information, feelings and opinions, engage in discussions and debates, produce a simple connected text, and describe experiences, events, hopes & ambitions.

Intermediate (B2/Level 1)

Understand main ideas of complex communication, interact with a degree of fluency, engage in discussion, and communicate in detail, appropriate to the people involved.

Upper Intermediate (C1/Level 2)

Understand demanding texts and recognise implicit meaning, use language fluently and spontaneously, engage in discussion making clear and effective contributions, produce well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, communicate ideas and opinions effectively.

Additional Costs
Students need to purchase a coursebook which will cost no more than £25.00
