March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

In Northern Ireland around 165 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year. Ovarian cancer develops when cells in the ovaries begin to grow out of control and can then invade nearby tissue or spread throughout the body. In most cases, women who have had their menopause are affected, but younger women can also develop ovarian cancer too.

Symptoms of ovarian cancer include:

  • Unexplained bloating
  • Feeling full quickly and/or loss of appetite
  • Stomach/lower stomach pain and needing to pass urine frequently
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Back pain
