Students on SERC’s foundation learning course have been getting involved with Leonard Cheshire’s “Can Do” project, which has develop their photography skills and is helping the students achieve a City and Guilds accreditation award.

Michael McAllister from Leonard Cheshire spoke to us about the Can Do project. “Can Do is a community-based skills development programme for individuals aged 16-35. The projects focus on skill development and building confidence through fun and engaging activities. Through Anne Murphy, Foundation Learning lecturer, we have developed a relationship with the college and have been able deliver projects and support students through the Can Do Project"

Michael continued “Currently we are delivering two projects with SERC. Firstly, the photography project, where students have been taking pictures of their life during lockdown. During the project we have had the opportunity to work with International Photographer Sean McKernan who has supported the students’ journey. We are also working closely with Michelle Graham and her class. Along with West Court centre for human rights and Blaze FX we are developing a mural project that highlights and brings awareness to the stigma around homelessness.”

Michael concluded “All of the students have been amazing; all the staff have done a wonderful job in supporting us with the projects even during lockdown, and the unique challenges it posed. The students' hard work has paid off with what looks like two great pieces of work. I’m sure the relationship and collaboration between SERC and Leonard Cheshire will go from strength to strength.”

Foundation Skills lecturer Anne Murphy spoke about the collaboration with Leonard Cheshire “The team from Leonard Cheshire have been stalwart supporters of SERC Students over 3 campuses, when the students were working towards completing their Duke of Edinburgh awards. They are so encouraging and so committed to bringing out the best in this group. Learning is fun and driven by the students ambitions to learn new skills and achieve new things. We cannot thank Michael and Michaela from Leonard Cheshire enough for all the time and effort they have given us and to Sean and Glenn who have given their time to share their expertise and talent.”

Featured are some of the great photos shot by the students as part of the photography project.
