In February, SERC hosted its fifth intercampus engineering skills competition, which took place at its Bangor and Lisburn campuses. The two-day competition, which was organised by the Mechanical Engineering team was designed to test the ability of students across the Bangor, Downpatrick, Lisburn and Nutts Corner campuses in turning, fabrication and welding categories.

Engineering apprentices Daniel Tumelty and Samuel Anderson were celebrating when they beat off stiff competition to be awarded first place in the Level 2 and Level 3 welding categories, whilst Fergal Breen scooped first place for fabrication, and Jamie Harris took home first place for turning.

Ivan Kelly, SERC Engineering lecturer comments: “Congratulations to our winners who claimed the welding, turning and fabrication categories respectively, and indeed everyone who took part in the competition. The aim of the competition was to challenge the students to manufacture components by using industry-based skills.

“Competitions like this enhances their skills and knowledge for work in the industry, and contributes to their learning experience, improving their confidence, while providing them with the opportunity to test their skills against their peers. We had a total of 56 level 2 and level 3 apprentices take part this year, which is our highest number to date from all four campuses.”

“We would like to thank Modern Machinery Supplies Lisburn and Norseman Safety, who supported the competition and supplied excellent prizes this year which were worth over £1,000 in value. Thanks also to the engineering team at SERC who prepared the students and made sure that the competition ran smoothly.”

Award winners were as follows:

  • Daniel Tumelty (Level 2 Apprenticeship NI in Engineering, Downpatrick campus) secured first place in the Level 2 welding category.
  • Dylan Redmond (Level 2 Apprenticeship NI in Engineering, Nutts Corner professional skills centre) secured second place in the Level 2 welding category.
  • Samuel Anderson (Level 3 Apprenticeship NI in Engineering, Nutts Corner Professional skills centre) secured first place in the Level 3 welding category.
  • Glendon Grant (Level 3 Apprenticeship NI in Engineering, Nutts Corner Professional skills centre) secured second place in the Level 3 welding category.
  • Fergal Breen (Level 3 Apprenticeship NI in Engineering, Bangor campus) secured first place in the fabrication category.
  • Ross Connolly (Level 3 Apprenticeship NI in Engineering, Downpatrick campus) secured second place in the fabrication category.
  • Jamie Harris (Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations, Bangor campus) secured first place in the turning category.
