It’s time to get walking for National Walking Month!
You may not realise it, but May is National Walking Month and now the evenings are lighter for longer, this makes it the perfect time to get outside, and get walking. Walking has a whole host of different health benefits and it is one of the easiest ways to be physically active – it doesn’t even have to feel like exercise. All you need is a comfy pair of shoes, and once you get moving, you’ll feel fitter, healthier, and happier. You don’t even have to meet up, it’s getting that team spirit going amongst yourselves and increasing your steps to help your health and beat the other participants taking part.
We are launching a Team Walking Challenge on Mental Health Awareness week as the theme is “5 ways to wellbeing” while reconnecting with nature across the week. Walking enables you to explore your local area on foot and get to know your community. Why not set yourself a challenge to walk in your local parks and walking paths, or why not take this opportunity to start having Walking Meetings as opposed to sitting in the campus, get out at home for a daily lunchtime walk or in the evenings to increase those steps!
Team Walking Challenge
A team will consist of up to 5 persons. The team can be made up of your own work team, colleagues from across the college and family members. You don’t even have to meet up, it’s about getting the team spirit going amongst yourselves and increasing your steps to help your health and be the winning team.
The Challenge will commence on Monday 10 May 2021 and the last day for recording your steps will be Sunday 30 May 2021.
What do you need to do?
- Set up your team
- Make up a fun team name
- Nominate a leader who will be responsible for collating the daily steps
- Team details should be submitted by the team leader to include team name and participants to be sent to mindyourself@serc.ac.uk by Friday 7th May 2021
- Download an App on your phone such as Strava, Weight-mate app, set your fit bit or use a pedometer to record your daily steps
- Check for updates and progress in the MS Team site to see how your team is doing.
The winning team will be the one with the most steps recorded at the end of the challenge and each participant in this team will receive a goodie bag.
