SERC Level 2 trainees in Carpentry, Joinery, Motor Vehicle, Land Based Engineering and Engineering recently completed work on an Eco Shed for St Joseph’s Primary School, Ballycruttle.
The project began in 2019 when St Joseph's approached members of SERC’s Training Organisation and asked for help with their Eco accreditation, which involved building tables and chairs from used pallets as well as making a shed using recycled bottles.
The Eco Council pupils in St Joseph’s, alongside SERC, organised the collection of two litre drinks bottles for the project and construction of the shed began in SERC’s Seymour Street premises close to the Lisburn Campus, but it had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Happily, work on the shed recommenced this year and on completion it was delivered to St Joseph’s Primary School, where the staff and pupils can make good use of it for a range of eco activities involving children throughout the school.
Terry Holland, SERC Senior Technical Support Officer, said “Our Trainees' were delighted to get back to working on the Eco Shed after lockdown. We are very pleased with the result of the project and glad we were able to help the school.”
Mrs Imelda Porter, Principal of St Joseph’s said, “The Eco shed looks amazing, and we would like to thank Mr Terry Holland and everyone involved in the College for helping to create this wonderful ECO storage hut. The children all had a wee trip out to see it yesterday after lunch and we all can't wait to use it.”
She added, “We have now gained the prestigious green flag award thanks to the help of the students and staff at SERC who worked alongside our Eco Council in creating this fantastic ECO hut for the whole school community to enjoy in the years ahead.”
