SERC Level 3 Extended Diploma Public Services students are undertaking 1000 miles of running, walking and cycling, which is being tracked through their private Strava group as a fundraising activity for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
RNLI provide a 24-hour rescue service in the UK and Ireland; they look after people on beaches and those affected by flooding. They have saved over 142,700 lives since 1824. They also influence and educate people while working internationally to tackle drowning in communities globally.
Lecturer Irwin Pryce said, “The first-year class of 13 students started the progress towards 1000 miles last week and aim to complete the 1000 miles target within one month.
“The students are participating in the hands-on project-based learning Leadership and Teamwork unit of their Public Services course and the fundraiser will allow the students to meet assessed criteria by completing a team activity with one student assigned as a leader who will oversee organisation. They will also accrue hours towards their Volunteering course unit, and work towards their Millennium Volunteers and Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
He added, “It is a fantastic opportunity to make a contribution to RNLI and we hope that everyone that can will support the young people and make their miles count by donating at Just Giving search serc1000miles.”
Included in their schedule was the “RNLI Mayday Mile” with students participating in a nationwide charity event for RNLI on the May bank holiday, walking a mile together, in fancy dress and even pyjamas
