Local businessman and race car driver Tony Greenan loaned the Italian Dallara F3 race car to the SERC MEA so students would have the opportunity to get experience working with a professional race car. Tony also loaned another of his F3 race cars to the SERC MEA in Bangor last year for a full re-preparation and setup for the 2022 season, and was impressed with the work the students did. The car will remain in SERC Bangor Campus for a couple of weeks as students use it to further their knowledge and skills in motorsport engineering.
While the race car is in the SERC MEA workshop, students will be inspecting various components for wear and lifting issues, replacing the fire extinguisher and seat belts, carrying out engine service, oils and checking of spark plugs, removing the gear cluster for inspection and a gear ratio change, setting up data communication links with the car and looking into the data acquisition system, and finally, setting up the suspension geometry and corner weights.
Stuart Parker, SERC Motorsport Lecturer comments, “Tony greatly supports our SERC MEA students and understands that students benefit greatly when getting up close to a contemporary single seater like his F3. Formula 3 is only 2 steps away from Formula 1 and has been likened to the best training field for drivers, engineers and mechanics alike. Indeed, Formula 1 has taken drivers and technical staff straight from F3. With the technology filtering effect, F3 cars have been known as baby F1 cars, as design, technical and racing architecture are the same. Tony is a very personable person; he made his own success from hard work and graft. He sees from his own hard work that giving youth a helping hand is the best way to inspire.”
