SERC Eco Committee

Last Thursday, the 2020-21 SERC Eco Committee was celebrated at a Virtual Awards Ceremony hosted by the Enterprise, Entrepreneurship and Environment (EEE) team to recognise the committee’s hard work and achievements over the past year.

Eco Officers and Green Champions received certificates recognising their individual skills development as well as their contribution to positive eco change both within SERC and beyond.

Committee members were praised for activities such as tree and flower planting in the local community, creating promotional materials such as posters and videos, running reusable mask stalls, creating bird feeders from upcycled materials, litter picks, research and much more.

Skills developed by the committee included graphic design, teamwork, communication, research, digital skills, leadership (chairing meetings), writing and publishing meeting agendas and minutes, citizenship, blog writing, marketing, promotion and environmental awareness and understanding.

Speaking about her experience as a Green Champion, Mary Black said, "I have immensely enjoyed learning about environmental issues such as climate change. This has given me a stronger drive and ambition to work upon them further in my future biology studies. I have also enjoyed the intercampus meetings and learning how everyone can make a difference through little changes, such as eco pledges and the mask campaign. Furthermore, by being a Green Champion, and taking part in eco meetings, my confidence has grown regarding public speaking. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the Eco Committee within SERC."

Deputy Head of EEE, Michael Holmes, praised the Committee’s efforts, adding, ‘it is amazing to see the Eco Committees going from strength to strength, with so many students taking an active role across our campuses and generating such exciting ideas and initiatives.’

The EEE team congratulates the Committee members and looks forward to working with existing and new members next year on creating positive eco change within our College and Community!

If you would like to become a Green Champion (staff or student) or Eco Officer (students only), please keep your eyes peeled for information on how to join, which will be released in September 2021!
