The Contemporary Travel and Tourism Industry  -  Enables you to develop an overall appreciation of the international tourism experience, understanding the structure and systems within the contemporary travel and tourism industry, examining the interactions between the different elements of the industry, such as accommodation provision, transportation, attractions, and both the different tourism settings and experiences. 

Managing the Customer Experience -  Provides you with background knowledge and understanding of how travel and tourism businesses manage the customer experience from the initial needs analysis through to after sales follow-up.

Professional Identity and Practice -  Guides you through the process of self-assessment of skills and competences, personal career planning and the application of different learning and development approaches within a work environment.

The Travel and Tourism Business Toolkit  - Provides students with the skills they need to become competent managers in a travel and tourism environment.

Leadership and Management for Service Industries (Pearson-set)  -  Enables you to gain understanding of leadership and management principles, and to review your potential for a career in management in the service sector.

Global Tourism Destinations  -  Provides you with an understanding of the scale, nature and development of tourism at a global level.

Visitor Attraction Management - Enables you to gain a further understanding of visitor attractions on a global scale, whilst also considering visitor types, motivations and their impacts, along with management techniques and issues which may affect the development process.

Work Experience - Enables you to develop personal and professional skills by engaging in practical tasks and activities within a relevant workplace.

Upon successful completion of the HNC, students may have the opportunity to progress onto the HND programme, or an alternative HE pathway where the HND is not an option In addition to the above units, you will also work towards a professional/personal development qualification and will be involved in a range of activities designed to improve employability within the Travel and Tourism sector.

Course Overview

Studying travel and tourism offers a range of benefits and insights into a dynamic industry with travel and tourism being one of the largest sectors worldwide, contributing significantly to economies and job creation. It provides opportunities to learn about diverse cultures, enhancing cross-cultural communication and career opportunities, including roles in hospitality, event planning, travel management, and destination marketing. This course allows students to investigate sustainable tourism practices and skill development including customer service, problem-solving, marketing, and HR management.

General Entry Requirements

The general entry requirements below identify the minimum qualifications needed to apply for the programme. Other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis on application.  You are required to upload a copy of your qualification certificates to show how you meet the entry requirements for the programme prior to enrolment.  Applications will also require successful completion of the admissions process.     

GCSE/ Level 2 Requirements  

  • GCSE grade C/4 in English Language, or Level 2 Certificate in Essential Skills- Communication, or equivalent in an approved alternative qualification.

 AND

  • GCSE grade C/4 in Mathematics, or Level 2 Certificate in Essential Skills-   Application of Number, or equivalent in an approved alternative qualification.

AND

  • Passes in 4 different subjects (can include English Language and Mathematics as above), with 1 at GCE Advanced (A) level (grades A-E), and 3 at GCSE level (grades A*-C*/9-4), or equivalent in an approved alternative qualification.    

Course Entry Requirements  

  • A minimum of 32 UCAS Tariff points including:
  • GCE A level (A2): Typical grade profile CC    OR  
  • [RQF] Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Travel & Tourism with overall award profile PP   OR  
  • Access to HE Diploma (NI): 45% overall   OR
  • An equivalent in an approved alternative qualification.     

Accreditation of Prior Learning   

  • Alternatively, you can provide evidence of your ability to undertake the programme by meeting the requirements for the Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process, either through Accredited Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or Accredited Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).   Further details on APL can be found in the HE Admissions Process of our website and the HE Accreditation of Prior Learning SOP.     

International Students English Language Requirements

  • International applicants, from Non-Native English speaking countries, must have evidence of English Language Level B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages:  
  • IELTS 6.0 (Academic) (minimum of 5.5 in all skills)   
  • PTE Academic 51 (minimum of 46 in each part)

Assessment is scheduled throughout the course using a combination of assessment methods, including examinations, e-portfolio, coursework, Project Based Learning, presentations, practical, posters, leaflets, role-play, and case studies. Each unit is graded individually with an overall single final grade (Pass, Merit, or Distinction) awarded at the end of the course.

Students are assessed using a range of methods. These may include:

Coursework: You will be asked to complete research and/or report on your development activities in a formal report.

Presentations: Students will present their findings to peers with some external entities involved where appropriate.

Practical: You may be asked to demonstrate your skills by completing assigned tasks/activities. This is dependent on the requirements of each unit of study.

Oral, written or online feedback will be provided during the course to help improve and monitor performance.

The HNC in International Travel and Tourism Management qualifies students to move directly to employment and work within the travel and tourism and hospitality industry.

Students have the option to progress onto the HND programme which also is offered at SERC (depending on application numbers).

This course also provides students with extensive opportunities for further study of a top up degree, at higher level, studying at some of these UK universities, The University of Central Lancashire, based in Preston, Liverpool John Moores and University of Ulster.

Entry can range from Year 1, 2 or final year entry depending on grades achieved and individual university entrance criteria set per year.

Event planning -  Organise and coordinate all aspects of events, from concept and budgeting to logistics and execution, ensuring a seamless and memorable experience for clients and attendees.

Travel Management - Overseeing and coordinating all aspects of business travel, including itinerary planning, vendor negotiation, cost control, and ensuring a smooth travel experience for employees or clients.

Destination Marketing - Promoting a specific location to attract visitors, enhance brand awareness, and boost local tourism through strategic campaigns and partnerships.
