Why Study This Course

This course will equip you with the essential skills and knowledge for a successful career in the film and television industry by exploring and developing a diverse range of skills in Pre-Production, Production and Post-Production. You will complete workshops and practical assignments delivered by industry experienced tutors focussing on key areas of screenwriting, cinematography, editing, sound design, motion graphics, lighting and broadcast resulting in the creation of a digital portfolio of work to enhance future employability and engagement with industry professionals and organisations.

Course Overview

The HNC in Film and Television course is delivered full-time over 3-4 days a week to allow students to balance other work and commitments alongside their course of study.

With our BTEC Higher Nationals in Film and Television we aim to develop students into professional, self-reflective individuals who can meet the demands of employers in the film and television industry and adapt to a constantly evolving world. Through industry linked projects our students will be provided with the core skills required for a range of careers in the TV & Film industry utilising our extensive range of professional equipment, broadcast studio and software.

Students will work in both group and individual projects creating a range of TV and Film productions such as documentaries, fictional films, music videos and promotional content for both broadcast and streaming platforms. The course aims to help students to develop industry connections through a strong programme of masterclasses, workshops and industry visits. The teaching team all work within the media industry in Northern Ireland and can offer advice and support to those seeking employment or further study in the field of creative media production.

Students will begin by completing a range of practical workshops covering camera, lighting, sound, directing, scriptwriting, editing and VFX before moving into industry structured projects for fictional and factual filmmaking. Students will explore the various production roles whilst developing their skillset which will provide a foundation to progress into their second unit and the opportunity to build upon their creative, technical and contextual knowledge and skill to begin applying them to more complex and professionally oriented outcomes.

The programme has two modules which are

  • A1 Concept and Development – This Unit is designed to enable the practice and development of underpinning knowledge, understanding and proficiency of creative practice through exploration of the subject area.
  • A2 Creative Project - This unit is designed to give students the opportunity to consolidate and apply their learning through the production of a portfolio of work related to project outcomes.

General Entry Requirements

The general entry requirements below identify the minimum qualifications needed to apply for the programme. Other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis on You are required to upload a copy of your qualification certificates to show how you meet the entry requirements for the programme prior to enrolment.  Applications will also require successful completion of the admissions process. 

GCSE/ Level 2 Requirements

GCSE grade C/4 in English Language, or Level 2 Certificate in Essential Skills - Communication, or equivalent in an approved alternative qualification

AND

GCSE grade C/4 in Mathematics, or equivalent in an approved alternative qualification. (Use if specific GCSE requirement) • GCSE grade C/4 in Mathematics, or Level 2 Certificate in Essential Skills- Application of Number, or equivalent in an approved alternative qualification. (Use if Ess Skills App Number accepted)

AND

Passes in 4 different subjects (can include English Language and Mathematics and as above), with 1 at GCE Advanced (A) level (grades A-E), and 3 at GCSE level (grades A*-C*/9-4), or equivalent in an approved alternative qualification.

Course Entry Requirements

A minimum of 32 UCAS Tariff points including:

GCE A level (A2): Typical grade profile CC [to include Moving Image Arts, or a media related subject)

OR

[RQF] Pearson BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma In Creative Media with overall award profile P

OR

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media with overall award profile MPP

OR

An equivalent in an approved alternative qualification.

Accreditation of Prior Learning 

Alternatively, you can provide evidence of your ability to undertake the programme by meeting the requirements for the Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process, either through Accredited Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or Accredited Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).   Further details on APL can be found in the HE Admissions Process section of our website and the HE Accreditation of Prior Learning SOP.

International Students English Language Requirements

International applicants, from Non-Native English speaking countries, must have evidence of English Language Level B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages:

• IELTS 6.0 (Academic) (minimum of 5.5 in all skills) 

• PTE Academic 51 (minimum of 46 in each part)

• Or equivalent UKVI-approved English Language Test

Students are assessed using a range of different methods.

You will be have both formative and summative assessments throughout the programme

These may include coursework, Project Based Learning, presentations, practical activities, role-play, products and case studies. 

This is dependent on the requirements of each unit of study. 

Oral, written and online feedback will be provided during your course to help improve and monitor performance.

Successful completion of the HNC Film and television course may provide you with the opportunity to complete a further year leading to the Level 5 HND in Film and Television. Students that successfully complete the HNC and HND programmes can progress to one of the following areas:

Employment - recent graduates of the HNC course have progressed onto Production Trainee Schemes with Northern Ireland Screen, permanent positions with some of NI's independent production companies as well as freelancing as crew members on a range of Film/Television/Commercial productions. This Higher National programme has been designed to equip students with the knowledge required to thrive in the changing world of work.

Roles may include, but are not limited to: Editor (assistant edit) Camera Operator Data Wrangler Director (Assistant Director) Foley Producer Director of Photography Lighting Camera Crew.

 The HNC course has been designed to provide students with a solid theoretical background to television and film production as well as extensive experience working with professional equipment on live projects throughout the year. The combination of knowledge and skills students acquire on the HNC are all transferable into an industry setting.

The course aims to help students to develop industry connections through a strong programme of masterclasses, workshops and industry visits. A kit list will be sent to students once accepted onto the course with specific requirements. 

This involves: A portable hard drive (1TB/2TB) approx. £50 

Closed back earphones (for editing) approx. £30 

In addition there may the opportunity for residential overnight location shoots. 

Students are asked to budget approx. £25 per night for each of these residentials to allow for accommodation and food costs.
