Level 3 in Design of Heat Pump Systems

This course is intended for heating professionals who will be designing heat pump systems.

Course Code: P11134
Campus: Newtownards, Holywood, Other
Study Type: Part-Time
Education Level Further Education
Department: Renewable Energies
Course Overview

The course explains the key elements of heat pump heating systems and the requirements for designing low temperature heating and hot water systems in dwellings. This course will cover the sizing of systems and selection of components, latest relevant legislation, ground source collector circuit design and sizing, open and closed loop systems, heating circuit design requirements, energy efficiency, pipework, heat emitters and low temperature hot water system design.

The assessment is completed via multiple choice theory papers and practically assessed worksheets.

Classroom based theory and design calculations and practical assessment workbook assessments.

Duration is 2-3 days depending on experience of heating design.

OFTEC: OFT21-504D: Design of Heat Pump systems.

Applicants must hold a nationally recognised qualification and/or registration in a trade associated with heating and/or plumbing. Candidates must provide evidence of relevant qualifications and/or registration to support entry.

Or

Must provide written evidence confirming that they have ‘on the job’ heating installation and/or maintenance experience and/or heat pump system design work for a period of not less than two years, and evidence of ongoing continual professional development. The evidence shall be in writing from the employer detailing precisely the type, range and volume of work carried out. This qualification would enable the holder to apply for OFTEC registration and for MCS certification for work under the scope of MIS 3005-D (The Heat Pump Standard- Design).

  • Know the health and safety risks and safe systems of work associated with heat pump system installation work (non-refrigerant circuits).
  • Know the requirements of relevant regulations/standards relating to practical installation, testing and commissioning activities for heat pump installation work (non-refrigerant circuits).
  • Recognise and explain the types of low carbon central heating systems.
  • Understand and consider appropriate factors, prior to the installation of low carbon central heating appliances.
  • Understand the requirements of low carbon heating and hot water system installation.
  • Know the fundamental principles of heat pump selection and system design that are common to all heat pumps.
  • Understand and consider appropriate factors, prior to the installation of low carbon central heating appliances.
  • Size and select heat pump systems and components.
  • Know the fundamental design considerations and principles that are specific to air source heat pumps.
  • Know the fundamental requirements for heat pump system design.

Your currently working in the industry.

Through Assessment via multiple choice theory papers and practical assessed worksheets (PAWS) you will become qualified in how to design a heat pump system.

Experiencing the operation and potential of the Heat Pump System to replace the existing Oil and Gas central heating systems to supply the properties energy needs.

On completion of this qualification there may be the opportunity to progress on to the OFT21-504A - Installation, commissioning and servicing of air source heat pumps and/or the OCN NI Green Technologies Level 5 Certificate.
