This is an intermediate level electrical/mechatronic engineering apprenticeship programme for students who have completed a 2-year Level 2 AppNI programme, and will take 2 years to complete. This course is for you if you are employed and wish to pursue a career in either Maintenance or Mechatronics Engineering.

Why Study This Course

You will use industry standard machinery to develop your practical skills as well as learning a range of engineering topics including electrical, pneumatics and PLCs.

This is an intermediate level electrical/mechatronic engineering apprenticeship programme for students who have completed a 2-year Level 2 AppNI programme, and will take 2 years to complete. Alternatively, this is a 3-year intermediate apprenticeship programme aimed at new apprentices who have already achieved GCSE Maths and English Grade C or above or Essentials Skills Level 2 qualifications in Communication and/or Literacy.

Course Overview

This course aims to develop practical skills and knowledge which are essential for working in the engineering industry.

Level 3 programme - 2 years 

This programme is for students who have already completed the 2-year Level 2 AppNI Engineering programme.

Successful completion will lead to the award of:

A Pearson BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Technical Knowledge) AND

An ETCAL NVQ Level 3 in a pathway determined by your employer.

Level 3 (Level 2 en-route) programme - 3 years

Successful completion will lead to the award of:

An ETCAL NVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations (in Year 1);

A Pearson BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Technical Knowledge) AND

An ETCAL NVQ Level 3 in a pathway determined by your employer.

You will need:

  • to be employed by a SERC approved engineering employer AND EITHER
  • to have achieved 5 GCSEs (including at least Grade C in English and Maths OR Level 2 Certificate in Essential Skills - Communication & Numeracy)

OR

completed a Level 2 AppNI programme in Engineering

The following Pearson BTEC Level 3 modules will be taken:

  • Health & Safety In The Engineering Workplace
  • Communications For Engineering Technicians
  • Mathematics For Engineering Technicians
  • Selecting And Using Programmable Controllers
  • Principles & App. Of Elec. Devices & Circuit
  • Electronic Measurement And Testing
  • Three-Phase Motors And Drives
  • Industrial Robot Technology
  • Microprocessor Systems And Applications

The ETCAL NVQ Level 3 qualification will be completed in your workplace and the units will be decided by your employer.

If on the 3-year en-route programme you will also complete ETCAL NVQ Level 2 in Year 1 in the college - the units will relate to electrical & mechatronic workshop skills.

You will also study Essential Skills to Level 2 in ICT unless you have already completed an equivalent ICT qualification at GCSE level or higher (Grade C or above).

As a student, you will spend 1 day/week in college and the other 4 days/week with your employer.

Successful completion of this programme will enable you to apply to progress to a Higher Level Apprenticeship dependent on meeting the entry requirements.
