This 2 year Level 3 course equips you with the skills and knowledge to further develop a career in Carpentry and Joinery. Students will attend the college 1-2 days per week and 2-3 days will be spent on site.

Why Study This Course

This L3 programme is a progression route from Level 2 or for anyone who has worked in carpentry & joinery for years but does not hold the certified qualification.

You will learn to construct joinery products, building methods, how to ensure safe working practices and learn how to use machinery specific for the industry.

Successful completion of this course can lead to employment or further Higher Level qualifications such as a HNC/D in Construction.

Course Overview

This 2 year Level 3 course equips you with the skills and knowledge to further develop a career in Carpentry & Joinery.

Students will attend the college 1 day per week and the remaining 4 days will be spent on site.

You will have the choice of two routes - Site Carpentry or Bench Joinery.

The Level 3 Site Carpentry Diploma allows you to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in Site Carpentry.

It covers the following skills:

  • Carry out first fix flooring and roofing
  • Carry out second fixing operations
  • Carry out first fix roofing and stairs
  • Carry out second fixing double doors and mouldings
  • Set up and use fixed and transportable machinery

The Level 3 Bench Joinery Diploma allows you to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in Bench Joinery.

It covers the following skills:

  • Set up and use fixed and transportable machinery
  • Manufacture shaped doors and frames
  • Manufacture stairs with turns

You will need:

  • an employer AND
  • an equivalent Level 2 qualification in Carpentry and Joinery or suitable experience with a Grade C or equivalent in Maths and English

Bench Diploma units:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • Principles of organising, planning and pricing construction work
  • Set up and use fixed and transportable machinery
  • Manufacture shaped doors and frames
  • Manufacture stairs with turns

Bench NVQ units:

  • Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
  • Confirming the Occupational Method of Work in the Workplace
  • Confirming Work Activities and Resources for an Occupational Work Area in the Workplace
  • Manufacturing Bespoke Architectural Joinery Products in the Workplace
  • Developing and Maintaining Good Occupational Working Relationships in the Workplace
  • Manufacturing Routine Architectural Joinery Products in the Workplace
  • Marking Out from Setting Out Details for Routine Architectural Joinery Products in the Workplace
  • Producing Setting Out Details for Routine Architectural Joinery Products in the Workplace
  • Setting up and Using Fixed Machinery in the Workplace 

plus optional unit (minimum x1)

  • Producing CAD Setting Out Details in the Workplace
  • Producing Setting Out Details for Bespoke Architectural Joinery Products in the Workplace
  • Producing Wood and Wood-based Products Using Computer Numerically Controlled / Numerically Controlled Machinery (CNC/NC) in the Workplace

Site Diploma units:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • Carry out first fix flooring and roofing
  • Carry out second fixing operations
  • Principles of organising, planning and pricing construction work
  • Carry out first fix roofing and stairs
  • Carry out second fixing double doors and mouldings

  • Installing Bespoke First Fixing Components in the Workplace
  • Installing Bespoke Second Fixing Components in the Workplace
  • Developing and Maintaining Good Occupational Working Relationships in the Workplace
  • Setting Up and Using Transportable Cutting and Shaping Machines in the Workplace

plus optional unit (minimum x2)

  • Erecting Structural Carcassing Components in the Workplace
  • Erecting Roof Structure Carcassing Components in the Workplace
  • Maintaining Non-structural and structural Components in the Workplace

Successful completion will allow you to apply for roles such as a fully qualified bench, site joiner or shop-fitting joiner.

Alternatively, you can study for the HNC/Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) in Construction or other Level 4 construction related qualifications.
