Why Study This Course

Bricklayers build and repair walls, chimney stacks, tunnel linings and decorative stonework. They may also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects.

On this programme you will learn about Structural and decorative brickwork, detailed brickwork, information, quantities and communicating and safe working practises.

This course is ideal if you have completed your GCSEs and are wanting to 'earn while you learn' about bricklaying.

Course Overview

This 2 year course is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge to further develop a career in Bricklaying.  One day a week will be spent in college and the remaining four days will be spent on site with an employer.

Learners will complete a Level 3 NVQ in Trowel Occupations and a Level 3 Diploma in Bricklaying to fully achieve the L3 Apprenticeship.

    You will need:

    • An employer in the trade area
    • A Level 2 qualification in Bricklaying or 
    • Relevant industry experience
    • Minimum of GCSE grade C in Maths and English or equivalent Essential Skills L2 in Literacy and Numeracy*

    *We will also consider those applicants who are working towards these qualifications.

     
    • Conforming to general health, safety and welfare in the workplace
    • Erecting masonry cladding in the workplace
    • Erecting masonry structures in the workplace
    • Confirming the occupational method of work in the workplace
    • Confirming work activities and resources for an occupational work area in the workplace
    • Erect masonry to form architectural and decorative structures in the workplace
    • Developing and maintaining good occupational working relationships in the workplace
    • Principles of organising, planning and pricing construction work
    • Setting out to form masonry structures in the workplace
    • Repair and maintain masonry structures
    • Constructing radial and battered brickwork
    • Carrying out decorative and reinforced brickwork
    • Constructing fireplaces and chimneys.

    Successful completion of this programme will enable you to apply to employment as a fully qualified bricklayer or can progress to further study such as a HNC/HLA in Construction or other Level 4 Construction related qualifications.
