Level 2 Apprenticeship NI in Engineering (Electrical/Mechatronics)
This is a 2-year entry level apprenticeship programme is aimed at apprentices who need to achieve Essentials Skills qualifications in Communication and/or Literacy alongside their vocational qualification.

We have 2 sessions available for application on this course in Bangor, Lisburn.
This course is for you if you are employed and wish to pursue a career in either Maintenance or Mechatronics Engineering. Students will benefit from on and off the job training and learning. They will experience hands-on learning in a work environment, combined with theoretical learning in the classroom environment.
The college also offers industry standard machinery to develop your practical skills as well as learning a range of engineering topics including electrical, pneumatics and PLCs.
This course aims to develop practical skills and knowledge which are essential for working in the engineering industry. Students will attend college 1-2 days per week, spending the rest of the week with their employer.
Successful completion will lead to the award of an OCN NI Level 2 Diploma in Engineering.
You will need:
- to be employed by a SERC approved engineering employer AND
- to have achieved 5 GCSEs (including at least Grade D in English and Maths OR Level 1 Certificate in Essential Skills - Communication & Numeracy)
The following mandatory modules will be taken:
- Health and Safety in an Engineering and Manufacturing Environment
- Mathematics for Engineering
- Understand the Principles of Science Used within Engineering
- Engineering Materials
- Practical Engineering Project
- Wiring and Testing Electrical Circuits and Equipment
- Wiring and Testing Programmable Controllers
- Fluid Power Systems
Depending on your workplace requirements, 1 additional module will be selected from the following:
- Hand Fitting
- Using Semi-Automatic Metal Inert Gas, Metal Active Gas and Flux Cored Arc-Welding Equipment
- Preparing and Using Lathes for Turning Operations
You will also study Essential Skills to Level 2 in Numeracy and Communication unless exempt through holding GCSE passes at Grade C or above in Mathematics, English and ICT.
As a student you will spend 2 day/week in College in Year 1 and 1 day/week in Year 2 provided you have made satisfactory progress in your Essential Skills qualifications.
You will spend the other 4 days/week with your employer.
