Primary school pupils have shown they have a flare for Languages after successfully completing a 10-week language course held at SERC's Bangor Campus.

To date, SERC has been offering the classes’ in-school to primary school children in the North Down area but due to their popularity the College decided to offer the courses in-house.

The pupils got to choose between French and Spanish classes giving them the opportunity to learn and participate in a fun learning environment as well as the ability to learn and memorize whole sentences using language in songs, games and by memorizing words, sentences and grammatical structures.

SERC Head of Languages Tessa Barrett welcomed parents to the college saying “The best time to learn a foreign language is when you are young and by putting the children into everyday situations adds to the learning experience.

Our informal and friendly classes provide the best environment for children to develop their self-confidence. And as the courses are fun, it gives them the idea that languages are not just another subject to learn at school, but can be fun, enjoyable and useful. I am delighted that a total of 12 pupils completed the French course and 18 completed the Spanish course.”

During the presentation ceremony SERC French tutor Sarah Black provided an overview of the topics the pupils had been learning during the course including role models, animals, numbers, colours, and countries. Despite some nervous faces, the pupils then sang two songs about the days of the week and their fingers much to the delight of the parents in attendance.

SERC Spanish tutor Juan Romero also provided an overview of the topics the pupils had been learning about during the course and then sang two songs about numbers.

The pupils were then presented with their certificates by Tessa Barrett in recognition of their competency.
