Course Overview

The UAL (University of Arts London) Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to access and progress to degree level study or employment in the media sector. They provide an opportunity for those who have an interest in media to explore, develop and test their creativity within a qualification structure that is stimulating and demanding and provides a supportive transition from general to more specialised study.

This course has been designed as a full 2 year programme.  In the first year of the programme you will complete 8 units which will give you a Level 3 Diploma (equivalent to 3 AS Levels). 

On successful completion of the first year you will 'top-up' by studying for an additional 5 units which will give you the full Extended Diploma.  You will work on a variety of exciting projects developing new programmes for TV or Radio, creating content for use in social media applications, designing print and promotional material, DVD covers, flyers, using digital SLRs to photograph on location or in studio.

You will also learn the skills to produce and edit film and sound. Learners will also have the opportunity to acquire the essential knowledge and tools for the world of work in the Media by developing transferable skills such as planning, research and analysis, working with others and effective communication.

Unit 3:- Introduction to Professional Practice in Creative Media Production

Unit 4:- Critical and Contextual Awareness in Creative Media Production

Unit 5:- Investigating Audio Production and Technology

Unit 6:- Investigating Visual Production and Technology

Unit 7:- Investigating Interactive Production and Technology

Unit 8:- Developing a Creative Media Production project.

The practical and creative skills that you will learn can immediately transfer into the workplace. Unit choices cover a diverse range of Media production including print, web, radio, television, Film, scriptwriting, Lighting, advertising and photography. 

You'll Learn:
The skills to produce and edit film and sound.  You will also learn how to produce radio programmes, video, photography, digital media content and a range of graphic design products.

You'll Love:

The hands-on approach to this course and getting experience in using equipment and technologies such as Adobe suite, including such applications as Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Audition, InDesign, web design etc. Developing your creativity by making short films.

Producing content for the college community radio stations, Bangor FM, Lisburn 98 FM and FM 105. Working with Internal & External clients by producing promotional videos, print campaigns and radio adverts

You'll Progress:

After successful completion of year one you will achieve the Level 3 Diploma and then progress to year 2 - Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology.

Students who successfully complete the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology can apply for a Foundation Degree, a HNC / HND or a BA (Hons) in a Media related subject.

Examples of alternative choices of employment within the media sector could be as a camera operator, radio producer, researcher, production assistant, Director, Scriptwriter, either working for an employer or as a freelance artist.

You'll Need:

4 GCSEs at Grade C or above preferably with English, Maths or Level 2 in Media and successful outcome at skills test and interview.

If you have previously completed Level 2 Media you need to achieve at least a merit grade to progress to Level 3 Media.

There will be additional costs for equipment.  Your tutor will give you details of these. 

This course will be timetabled for 21 hours per week, 15 hours of vocational classes, 3 hours of employability skills and 3 hours of Essential Skills English and Maths.  

You will also work towards a Personal Development qualification and will be involved in a range of activities, designed to improve employability.

You will be required to complete Essential Skills in ICT, Literacy and Numeracy if you do not have a GCSE grade C in English, Maths or ICT.
