Course Overview

This one year Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Make-Up is a qualification that has been specially designed to enable you to learn both aspects of hairdressing and media make-up artist.  Within the course you will develop the knowledge and skills to prepare you for employment as a junior hair and make-up artist.  Learners will have their hairdressing and make-up artistry skills assessed in a real or realistic working environment.

Modules studied may include:

  • The art of dressing hair
  • The art of photographic make-up
  • Apply make-up
  • Client care and communication in beauty-related industries
  • Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
  • Lash and brow treatments
  • Cut women's hair
  • Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp
  • Themed face painting
  • Colour hair

Assessments will be carried out on paying clients.  

You would like to work as a Junior Hair and Make-up Artist in the Hairdressing, TV, Film or Theatre industry.

The art of dressing hair, how to apply make-up, lash and brow treatment, how to cut women’s hair and colour hair. You will also create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty industry. 

Learning aspects of both hairdressing and media-up which will prepare you for employment. The hands-on approach to this course and getting experience in the College Salons of Shadeka and Revive.

Working at commercial events such as Halloween and Christmas shows.

Successful completion will allow you to progress onto employment or the Level 3 in Hairdressing or Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Hair and Media Make-Up.

To be 16+ years of age on 1 July

2 GCSEs at Grade C or above preferably in English and Maths and successful outcome at skills test and interview.

Mature students with experience but not the entry requirements will also be eligible. You will be required to complete a skills test and interview for this course.

This full-time course will be timetabled over 21 hours per week ie - 15 hours of vocational classes, 2 hours per week employability training and 4 hours per week Essential skills English, Maths and ICT.

You will be required to attend essential skills in Literacy, Numeracy and IT if you do not have a GCSE grade C or above in English, Maths and IT. 

Students are required to provide materials and equipment e.g. (Uniform and Kits). Your tutor will inform you of extra costs involved with these.
