Course Overview

On successful completion of this 1 year full time course you will achieve the equivalent of 4 GCSEs.

The course will require a commitment of 15 hours per week. The course purpose is to inspire and encourage learners to consider a career in the Business Industry. It is the aim of the qualification to give learners the opportunity to gain a broad knowledge and understanding of, and develop skills in, the business sector. It also hopes to support progression to a more specialised level 3 vocational or academic business course. Fundamentally, it hopes to give learners the potential opportunity, in due course, to enter employment within a wide range of junior job roles across the business sector, for example posts in finance, accounting, administration and retail.

Modules you will study may include:

Enterprise in the Business World

Principles of Marketing

Business Online and Introducing Project Management

Promoting a Brand

You will be required to complete Essential Skills in Literacy, Numeracy or ICT if you do not have a GCSE grade C in English or Maths or ICT.

Course Modules

The course consists of six mandatory units and three to six optional specialist units. Two of these mandatory units are externally set and the remaining units are coursework based.

Core units include: Enterprise in the Business World, Promoting a Brand, Small Business Planning, Business Online and Introducing Project Management.

External Exam Units are: Finance for Business and Principles of Marketing.

You will also work towards a Personal Development Qualification and will be involved in a range of activities, designed to improve your employability.

Students without GCSE English/Maths/ICT will be required to attend Essential Skills during their course of study.   Units are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction and final grades are awarded according to marks achieved throughout the course.

Each unit is worth 30 or 60 credits and each receives a grade worth a number of BTEC points. All points are added together for Year 1 total to determine the final grade for the First Diploma.
