Foundation Learning - Employability And Personal Development - Year 1

This programme is for students with moderate to severe special educational needs and aims to assist in providing students with the skills that are required to support them in employment and to improve and develop their own personal skills. This course helps you to improve your own personal and employability skills and gives you the opportunity to obtain work experience.

Course Overview


As part of the programme students may get the opportunity to complete a work placement.

This course is available in Newtownards, Downpatrick and Lisburn campuses.  This course will involve working towards a City and Guilds qualification in Employability and Personal Development.

There is an attendance commitment of 18 hours per week for this course.

Modules may include:

  • Candidate Project
  • Developing Personal Confidence 
  • Drug & Alcohol Awareness 
  • Enterprise Activity 
  • Introduction to ICT  
  • Plan and Make a Journey 

Students will participate in completion of The Duke of Edinburgh Award throughout their time on the programme. To support completion of expedition, adjustments can be made where assessors feel it is necessary. However, we can only make adjustments that allow students to still demonstrate the 20 conditions for expedition.

In addition, students may work towards a work placement supported by Mencap or Stepping Stones NI. Start date for work placement will be decided by the core team and may take place at anytime during year one. Monitoring of work placement may be transferred at anytime during the programme between Mencap and SERC. This will not disrupt students work placements.

Students may also get the opportunity to sample vocational areas such as Catering or Ceramics depending on campus.

Confirmation of a place on the course cannot be made until Special Educational Needs evidence is provided.  

On provision of appropriate evidence and completion of a taster session, more details regarding student timetables and confirmation of a place on the programme will be forwarded to parents/guardians. This should be available before the start of the academic year of enrolment. However, timetables are subject to change up to the end of September.

You'll Progress:

to employment either full-time, part-time or voluntary. Successful completion of this two year programme can enable students to progress onto the Advanced Job Club one year course. Progression, however, is not automatic on completion of this programme, it depends on the student's ability to progress to a higher academic level and to gain further employment/social skills. Decisions regarding progression are made by the course team.  Some students may have the option to progress onto a range of Level 1 TfS programmes. 

You'll Need:

to provide evidence that you have a Special Educational Need to confirm a place on this course. All applicants will be provided with a form to be completed prior to the start of the course. This form will require a signature from either a G.P., Social Worker, Psychologist, Psychiatrist or School Representative along with a letter regarding the applicant's Special Educational Need.
