Course Overview

This course is specifically designed to allow adults out of full-time education (2 years or more) the opportunity to return to study and progress to University.  The Access Foundation Diploma is validated by Queen’s University Belfast and is equivalent to 3 A levels.  The aim of the course is to prepare students for further academic study at University, and is designed to improve knowledge, academic skills and also improve both personal and academic confidence. 

The Access Diploma in Foundation studies can be studied full-time over one year (Fast Track) or full-time over two years.

A prospective full-time candidate will be selected for either the fast track (available in Downpatrick, Lisburn and Bangor only) or 2 year programme dependant on academic history, interview and diagnostic tests.  The decision of the admissions tutor is Final.   Full-time courses are 15 hours per week and are free.

MODULES MAY INCLUDE:

2 different pathways are available and each Diploma consists of 6 modules;  

Combined Science (available only in Bangor)

  • Study Skills
  • Biology 1 & 2
  • Chemistry 1 & 2, and
  • Maths (Fast track only)

Social and Biological Science (available Bangor, Downpatrick and Lisburn).

Mandatory modules may include:

  • Study Skills
  • Biology 1

A choice of a further four modules which may include;

  • Psychology
  • English Literature
  • America Literature
  • Sociology
  • Mathematics
  • Biology 2
  • Chemistry 1
  • Irish History

You'll Learn:

from a range of subjects specific to the route you want to undertake, from science or psychology to English or mathematics.

the development of your personal and academic confidence through the debate and discussion you will be involved with and the enrichment activities such as guest speakers.

You'll Progress:

to a Higher Education course at University or College. Typical Degrees courses have included Nursing, Social Work, Applied Science, Law, Teaching, Occupational therapy, History or Sociology. Award students can progress to Access Diploma in Foundation Studies which then can lead to Higher Education with typical Degrees courses including Nursing, Social Work, Applied Science, Law, Teaching, Occupational therapy, History or Sociology.

You'll Need:

to have been out of Full-Time education for 2 years and must have GCSE English, Maths, Science and a good range of other educational qualifications for the Fast Track one year programme. For the Award year followed by the Diploma year, no formal qualifications are necessary. Entry to all programmes is subject to successful performance at interview and in Literacy and Numeracy assessments.
